Want to get checked for STI’s

Anyone who has sex can have an STI.

It doesn’t just happen to ‘bad’ people and people who sleep around – it can happen to anyone even if they only have sex once. Most of the time, people can’t tell if they have an STI so it’s always worth getting tested, and getting your partner tested if you are in a relationship.

What should I do if I think I might have an STI, or if I want to get checked?

Make an appointment at the GUM Clinic which is based at Halton Hospital. Call 01928 753217 to book yourself in.

You could even call other GUM Clinics near to Halton to see if their waiting times are shorter and if it’s better for you;

  • St Helen’s – 01744 646 473
  • Warrington – 01925 662 476
  • Liverpool – 0151 706 2621
  • Southport – 01704 513 303
  • Ormskirk – 01695 571 043
  • Chester – 01244 363 091
  • Arrow Park, Wirral – 0151 604 7339

Alternatively if you would like to contact the GUM Clinic for advice then please email: health.advisor@sthk.nhs.uk

Sometimes you don’t need to have an appointment as some clinics are ‘walk-in’ but it’s best to call them first to check the opening times.

What should I do if I’ve got an STI?
  1. Get some advice from the staff at the GUM Clinic who will tell you what you should and shouldn’t do.
  2. Make sure whomever you have slept with is checked out and cleared of infection before having sex with you or anyone else. If you don’t want to tell them they may have an infection the clinic staff will do it for you (called ‘contact tracing). They will contact people you have slept with over a period of time but none of your details will be passed on – nobody will ever know it was you because this is an anonymous service.
  3. Avoid sex until the STI has been treated and has gone away.
  4. Always use a condom every time you have sex.

If you are worried about having an STI or even if you would just like to have a test, call the GUM Clinic for an appointment 01928 753217

Warning

Rashes, sores, burning, smelling, itching and generally feeling unwell are some symptoms that you may have an STI

BUT most people don’t have any signs or symptoms that they have an STI so always get checked!
